When to send wedding invitations
Updated 2026-11-08
Send save the dates about 4 to 6 months before the wedding (up to a year for a destination wedding), the main wedding invitation about 6 to 8 weeks before, and a reminder e-invite or WhatsApp message about one week before. In India many families send invitations 3 to 4 weeks ahead, with personal visits to close relatives earlier.
4 to 6 months before: save the date
Tell guests to keep the date free, especially those who need to travel or book leave.
6 to 8 weeks before: the invitation
Send the full invitation with every event, date, time and venue. For a digital invitation this is when you post it on WhatsApp and Instagram.
3 to 4 weeks before: personal invitations
Visit or call elders and close relatives with the printed card or the video on your phone.
1 week before: reminder
Re-send the video, or a shorter reminder, with the venue location.
The day before: event details
Share parking, timings for each function and a contact number in the family group.
Questions
Is it too late to send invitations two weeks before?
It is late for guests who travel, but fine for local guests; send a digital invitation immediately and call key guests.
Should I send e-invites and printed cards?
Many families do both: e-invites to everyone, printed cards to elders and close family.
